The Junior 2D Animator will be responsible for creating 2D animations for various projects. This includes designing characters, backgrounds, and assets, as well as animating scenes to bring them to life. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of animation principles, be proficient in animation software such as Adobe Animate or Toon Boom Harmony, and have a creative eye for detail. They will work closely with the art director and other team members to ensure that the animations meet the project requirements and deadlines.
Tasks and Duties

Task Objective: In this task, you will focus on developing a detailed character concept and creating a simple walk cycle animation. This exercise is designed to assess your ability to transform a character idea into a tangible animated figure along with demonstrating basic animation principles.

Expected Deliverables: A document or file (in .mp4 or a similar format) that includes the character design sheets, finalized color and detail sketches, and a completed walk cycle animation (in any video format). Submissions should also include a brief written explanation outlining your design choices and the animation techniques employed.

Key Steps:

  1. Develop a unique character concept by brainstorming ideas and sketching initial designs. Refine these designs into a final character model with a front view, side view, and back view.
  2. Create a storyboard that outlines the walk cycle and defines key frames for the animation.
  3. Use animation software (such as Adobe Animate, Toon Boom Harmony, or another preferred tool) to produce a smooth walk cycle animation emphasizing fluid movement and realistic timing.
  4. Compile your character sketches, design documents, and the final animated sequence into a single file or folder.

Evaluation Criteria: Your submission will be evaluated based on creativity, fidelity of character design, smoothness of the walk cycle, clarity in presentation, and detail provided in the accompanying explanation. Focus on the principles of timing and spacing in animation to ensure dynamic, believable movement.

Task Objective: This week's task emphasizes the creation of compelling animated backgrounds and dynamic environmental elements. You are to develop a detailed background scene and integrate simple animations such as moving clouds, flowing water, or rustling foliage, demonstrating your aptitude in setting an immersive stage for animated actions.

Expected Deliverables: A fully rendered animated background scene file that includes a still background (created via digital painting or drawing) with animated environmental elements. Alongside the animation, include a brief document explaining your creative choices, the techniques used, and any challenges encountered during the production process.

Key Steps:

  1. Conceptualize and sketch multiple drafts for the background design, ensuring that it complements potential character animations.
  2. Create your final background using your digital drawing or painting technique of choice.
  3. Add dynamic elements such as moving clouds or water to your scene using layered animation principles. Focus on loopable and natural motion.
  4. Export the final background scene as a video file (MP4, AVI, etc.), ensuring the file contains both the static and animated elements seamlessly.
  5. Write a summary document explaining your creative and technical process.

Evaluation Criteria: Submissions will be judged on visual appeal, attention to detail, effective integration of moving elements, and clarity of the process documentation. Ensure that your background supports storytelling and demonstrates thorough understanding of compositional techniques.

Task Objective: In this task, you will design separate animated assets that interact with each other in a cohesive scene. The focus is on dynamic asset creation and integrating them within a single animated composition, showcasing your multitasking and coordination skills in the animation process.

Expected Deliverables: A final animation file wherein multiple assets (for example, a flying object, a moving vehicle, or interactive props) are animated to interact within a scene. Bring in additional design files or layered artwork sheets that display individual asset designs. Provide a brief narrative detailing how each asset interacts within the scene and the techniques used to achieve smooth transitions.

Key Steps:

  1. Sketch and design multiple assets that will appear in your animated scene. Ensure that designs maintain a consistent artistic style.
  2. Create animation sequences for each separate asset using key frame techniques in your animation software.
  3. Plan out how these assets will interact within a single layout by drafting storyboards that highlight the interplay, timing, and transition between movements.
  4. Integrate the assets into one composition and render a cohesive animation.
  5. Compile your design and storyboard files along with the final animation video.

Evaluation Criteria: Your work will be assessed based on the originality of asset design, smooth integration within the composition, consistency in style between assets, and the overall quality of the interactive animation narrative. Emphasize clean transitions and clear visual storytelling.

Task Objective: The aim of this task is to fine-tune your scene composition skills by creating a short animated scene that effectively manages timing, layering, and spatial dynamics. This revolves around assembling characters, backgrounds, and assets into a synchronized narrative emphasizing precise timing and movement refinement.

Expected Deliverables: Your final deliverable should be a single animation file combining previously developed elements (or new ones) into a short scene (20-30 seconds). Additionally, a written summary detailing the choices made for timing, scene layout, and any challenges faced should be submitted.

Key Steps:

  1. Plan your scene using a detailed storyboard that outlines key moments, transitions, and the various layers of elements (e.g., foreground, middle ground, background).
  2. Arrange and synchronize your character, asset, and background animations ensuring cohesiveness in the overall composition.
  3. Concentrate on timing, using methods such as slow-in/slow-out, to enhance natural transitions in your animated sequences.
  4. Preview and refine your scene to ensure that all elements interact smoothly and that the narrative flow is engaging.
  5. Export your scene as a high-quality video file along with a document that explains your approach and any timing adjustments made.

Evaluation Criteria: The exercise will be evaluated on scene composition, the effective use of timing and layering, integration of various elements, and the clarity of documentation. Particular attention will be given to your ability to tell a clear story through the use of timing and spatial relationships.

Task Objective: In the final task, you will synthesize your skills by creating a comprehensive animated sequence that combines character animation, background design, dynamic assets, and sound effects. This task is designed to simulate a real-world project, emphasizing sound synchronization with visual animation as well as final polish and professionalism.

Expected Deliverables: A final animated sequence (lasting 20-30 seconds) that integrates your visual elements with sound effects or background music. Submit the final animation file (in a video format such as MP4) and a supporting document that explains your choices in sound design, timing, and overall integration.

Key Steps:

  1. Create or source suitable sound effects and background music that complement the visual tone of your animation. Ensure that all sounds used are either self-created or available for public use.
  2. Integrate the audio elements into your previously developed scene or a newly constructed narrative sequence. Use your animation software’s timeline to ensure precise synchronization between the visuals and sound.
  3. Review and refine your animated sequence focusing on the interplay between audio and animation, adjusting for any discrepancies in timing.
  4. Prepare a final rendered version of your animation, ensuring high audiovisual quality.
  5. Document your process in a brief narrative that details challenges encountered, the tools used for sound integration, and how the final product meets the criteria of a unified animated scene.

Evaluation Criteria: Submissions will be reviewed on overall audiovisual integration, creativity in merging sound with visuals, clarity in narrative, and consistency in design style. Your ability to balance the audio and visual components to produce a smooth, engaging final product will be a key measure of success.
