About this Internship

This Payroll Accounting internship connects payroll processing with accounting and HR operations. You will learn payroll journal entries and how payroll flows into the general ledger, month-end payroll reconciliation, accruals, working with an HRMS/payroll module, and producing statutory and management reports. By the end you will understand how payroll integrates with finance and HR systems end to end.

Week 1 Task: Payroll Journal Entries & the General Ledger

Learn how payroll is recorded in accounting.

Objective

1)

Understand how a payroll run is recorded: salary expense, statutory liabilities, and net pay, and how these post to the general ledger.

Deliverable: prepare the journal entries for a sample payroll run.

Week 2 Task: Payroll Reconciliation & Accruals

Summary

Reconcile payroll to the GL and handle month-end accruals.

Objective

1)

Learn month-end payroll reconciliation, identifying and fixing variances, and salary/bonus accruals.

Deliverable: reconcile a sample payroll register to a GL summary and note any differences.

Week 3 Task: HRMS / Payroll Software Operations

Work with an HRMS payroll module end to end.

Objective

1)

Understand how an HRMS/payroll system handles employee master data, attendance, and pay processing, and the importance of clean input data.

Deliverable: a short process map of how data flows from HR to payroll to accounting in a typical HRMS.
